At the heart of Learnerobics is a simple but powerful truth: the brain can change. This principle — known as neuroplasticity — is what makes it possible for struggling learners to strengthen the pathways needed for language, reading and learning success. One of the pioneers behind this research is Dr Michael Merzenich, an award-winning neuroscientist who co-developed the Fast ForWord (the evidence based online program we use to exercise auditory processing skills).

It's been made possible by advances in brain imaging technology since the 1990s.  These highly detailed images can now measure not just the growth of neural pathways, but also measure the effectiveness of interventions like Fast ForWord.

In recognition of his groundbreaking work in brain plasticity, Dr Merzenich received the Kavli Prize in 2016 — often described as the “Nobel Prize for Neuroscience.”

His work, alongside other leading scientists, is featured in the international best-selling book The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Doidge. This book inspired thousands of parents and educators worldwide by showing that the brain can rewire itself at any age through targeted, repetitive, evidence-based activities. Fast ForWord is built on this same research: it uses carefully structured sound and language exercises to strengthen attention, working memory, sequencing and auditory processing speed — the very foundations of understanding, fluent reading and learning.

A New Era in Teaching and Learning

This neuroscience revolution is not just changing individual lives — it’s reshaping education. Across Australia, schools and educators are embracing Science of Reading and Science of Learning frameworks. These research-based approaches move away from outdated “wait and see” methods and toward evidence-informed practices that directly support how the brain learns to read and process language.

By integrating cognitive science with classroom instruction, these frameworks emphasise explicit, systematic approaches that build the brain’s learning pathways from the ground up.

At Learnerobics, our work aligns with these principles — giving children the opportunity to strengthen their cognitive and language foundations early, so they can thrive in school and beyond.

Neuroscience shows us that learning struggles are not permanent roadblocks — they are opportunities for growth when we give the brain the right kind of exercise.
